GENERAL INFORMATION
Approximately 22 productions in the three sectors of the performing arts – opera, plays and dance – are staged every season. These are performed in the main theater (ca. 200 performances, all genres), in UG (ca. 80 performances, primarily theatre productions), and in the Figure Theater (ca. 45 performances, primarily guest ensembles). Together with its fringe programs, the Lucerne Theater presents over 350 performances per season, attracting some 100,000 visitors every year, two thirds of whom come from the canton of Lucerne.
STAFF
The Lucerne Theater employees per season about 400 staff members in approximately 300 full-times jobs. Half of these staff members are employed in the artistic fields (including artistic direction, ensemble, chorus, dramaturgy, public relations) and the other half as technicians (including workshops, stage, lighting, sound, props, masks, costumes, administration, box office).

PERFORMING ARTS FOR central switzerland
The LUCERNE THEATER is the only theatre in Central Switzerland which presents productions in different sectors of the performing arts – opera, theatre, dance and figure theatre – and has its own professional ensembles. It offers performances on a high artistic level to a broad public and supplements its repertoire with a diverse fringe program.
"Discovery theatre"
The LUCERNE THEATER works together with young talent from all over the world, enabling them to develop as professionals on their way to forming an international career. The LUCERNE THEATER has also successfully positioned itself as a "discovery theatre" with regard to its repertoire, authors and composers, creative teams and forms of artistic expression.
Recollection, innovation, entertainment
The LUCERNE THEATER is committed to presenting productions with a high level of artistic quality based on the central theme of recollection, innovation, entertainment. It conjoins contemporary theatre arts and needs of the audience.
Broad target audience
The LUCERNE THEATER aims to inspire its visitors and provide artistic content, thereby appealing to as many people as possible and continuing to reach new audiences - primarily within Central Switzerland. With its specific programs, the LUCERNE THEATER is also geared towards children and youth as well as senior citizens.
International network
The LUCERNE THEATER fosters close collaboration with the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra as its opera orchestra and also works together with major cultural and educational institutions in Lucerne. It cooperates with national and international theatres and festivals. The LUCERNE THEATER maintains partnerships with donors, sponsors and further theatre enthusiasts.
Important employer and customer
As an employer and customer, the LUCERNE THEATER also plays an important economic role in the region of Lucerne: with some 400 full-time and temporary staff members on and behind the stage. The LUCERNE THEATER treats its employees responsibly and fairly.

Start of construction for the theater at the present location, based on a design by Louis Pfyffer von Weyer (CHF 40,000 was allocated for building costs)
1839
Grand opening of the new theatre with a mythological prologue and Friedrich Schiller’s "William Tell"
1840
The theater company turns over the theater to the City of Lucerne
1924
A fire involving the roof timbering destroys the set designs, props and entire stock of costumes; reconstruction
1968-70
Fundamental building alterations and restructuring lent the theater its present-day form and furnishings
1996
The city theater is converted into a foundation under private law as the LUCERNE THEATER
1997-98
Diverse renovations, expansion of the orchestra pit, redesign of the 4th floor
2004
Dominique Mentha assumes position as director of the Lucerne Theater
2009
A theater festival commemorates the 170th anniversary on August 29, 2009
The Lucerne Theater is the oldest theater in Switzerland today still producing works in various sectors of the performing arts.
