Im Weissen Rössl (The White Horse Inn)
Luzerner Theater Im Weissen Rössl (The White Horse Inn)Musical comedy in three acts by Ralph Benatzky Text by Hans Müller and Erik Charell, Lyrics by Robert Gilbert In German Premiere: 30. Oktober 2011 The world is still in order in St. Wolfgang on Lake Wolfgang – or so it appears, with the shimmering waves on the lake, the snow-covered mountains in the distance and the jubilant cows dancing in the stall carried away by sheer impulse. But the people living in St. Wolfgang have no time to appreciate the idyll. They are too preoccupied with themselves and their longings: the head waiter is desperately in love with the owner of the inn, the landlady fancies a regular guest, the lawyer flirts with his adversary’s daughter, the professor only has eyes for his research, the virtuous lass strives for good behaviour, while her suitor prefers the contrary, and the ill-tempered factory owner wants to return to Berlin. The Emperor himself has to travel to St. Wolfgang to ensure a happy end to this convoluted affair…
Ralph Benatzky combines an Alpine summer retreat with Berliner farce and Viennese sentimentality to create a colourful revue in this musical comedy, which is often misunderstood as an operetta, whose plot is composed of individual picturesque scenes with lively characters. The music, to which Robert Stolz and Robert Gilbert also contributed, among others, juxtaposes intimate love songs, saucy hit songs, lively dance music and rustic schuhplattler with the folk-like sound of a ship and fire brigade band. It comes as no surprise that this tongue-in-cheek buoyant comedy appeared as one of the first German musicals immediately following its premiere in 1930, with lasting success in all theatre repertories around the world until today.
